Hey! How’s the weather out by you? Nearing the ides of the first month of 2022 here now in sunny Southern California / La-La Land / Studio City / Upper Nichols Canyon, and we’ve reached today’s forecast high of 75°F just before the noon-thirty hour.
As you can see in the snapshot in today’s lede, the autumn-type leaves still are falling around here. We are sweeping this patio area several times a day in order to keep the combination human-canine jai alai fronton / kickball-pinball surface / Aztec balance-ball court free and clear of any potential interference to the five rolling rubber spheroids in play at any given moment. Nothing worse than a bunch of crunchy dead foliage — or, when it’s rainy, puddles — spoiling the continual rolling action of the games. It’s like at the ice arenas with their Zambonis; you want as clean and glassy a surface as possible.
Wrestling with one-for-97 streaks with that one hit being a whopping 2½-1 on the toteboard. Withstanding that existential crisis. Then like the buses in London, or the cabs in New York City, after not showing-up for forever, the winners come in droves and you’re back in front — what one-for-97?! — for the long haul. Not for mere mortals. You probably would be better off throwing darts at the official track programme, more-frequent cashing. Yet after several hundred wagers, you’d likely be down the track-take, or the track-take-plus. Randomness!
On the other hoof, somehow after these demoralizing one-for-97 streaks, the remainder of the couple of hundred races are good enough to make up for the dragged-out drought. If you’re a robot or one of those rare birds who doesn’t let doubt or emotion get in the way of long-term ‘rational’ thinking, no harm, no foul. But most mopes out there need a more regular feeding schedule, even if it means giving back some money. Would you withstand a one-for-97 to come out ahead at the end of it? Not for the fainthearted.
The trials continue, experimental and existential. We look ahead to now and find Golden Gate 6, Gulf 10, Santa Anita 5 trying to bring some reward to the ever-lurking risk.
