Today’s Stakes Pageantry<\/strong>: RP 8<\/strong> is a stakes race, and it’s on the pay-side.<\/p>\n

Yesterday’s Activity<\/strong>: CD 8 had a good one in Fancy Hat.<\/p>\n

Top-touted on the pay-side, Fancy Hat was buried deep on the Betting Line, no Fair Odds. However, the race was contentious, and Fancy Hat had a qualifying LifeLiner Speed Column score, second-best in the field, actually.<\/p>\n

From a morning line of 12-1, Fancy Hat was allowed to escape at 40¢ shy of 20-1. She tracked the pace in second all the way around before coming up big at the furlong grounds to win by 1 length. She paid $41.20 up top. <\/p>\n

Almost an even better glory in the finale there, in which top-touted Walkin in a Shadow came so close to springing a fine upset. Walkin in a Shadow, 15-1 on the morning line and more than twice that in real life at 30¢ shy of 36-1, was, like Fancy Hat, ignored on the Betting Line, no Fair Odds. However, also like Fancy Hat, she came up strong in the LifeLiner Speed Column, 93, also, like Fancy Hat, second-best in the field.<\/p>\n

Walkin in a Shadow was up close all the way around, actually making the lead with an eighth of a mile to go. She could not hold off the winner, though, losing out by three parts of a length. <\/p>\n

The 4-1 winner was OK on LifeLiner, and saver exacta came back $317.20. Not bad for insurance, so-called, and better than the unintended consequences of Oblahblahcare, right? <\/p>\n
