It was First Bonkersmate Mr Algebra, 8-1 on the morning line and 6-1 in real life, stayed close to the pace and went away at the end to win by just over 3 lengths as the co-top LifeLiner Speed Column scorer in the race, paying $14.20 straight. The runner-up was the 2½-1 fave, and the exacta paid $49, a little skimpy for 6-1 over 2½-1 in a 10-horse lineup. The third-place finisher was OK on LifeLiner Speed, and the trizacta returned $225.50, for $2.<\/p>\n

In Race 7, sole-touted SAM Sparkle, 10-1 on the morning line and 8-1 on the toteboard, also attended the pace and also drew off late, running away by 5 lengths to a $19.40 win mutuel. The public’s second-choice, 2½-1 and top LifeLiner Speed Column in the field, ran second to complete the $56-even exacta. The 11-10 fave, the third of three LifeLiner qualifiers in the race, completed a $174 (for $2) trifecta.<\/p>\n

As always, Welcome to The Home of The Runner-Up Finish, this time led in Race 7 at Churchill by I’m Straight (remember that Jonathan Richman\/Modern Lovers song of the same title? Hippie Johnnie?). I’m Straight was one of three horseys tied at Fair Odds of 3-1 on the Betting Line, and OK on the LifeLiner. I’m Straight, 8-1 on the morning line and 14½-1 when the gates opened, set a pressure-cooker pace throughout before yielding late, losing by a mean length. Cruel! The 17-10 fave did the denying, and the saver exacta paid $76.20.<\/p>\n
