Honourable mention in the seventh at Santa Anita to Crimson Giant, 20-1 on your morning line and 45-1 when the gates opened. The ’Giant ran like a pussycat for the first 4½ furlongs of the 5 ½-furlong race, and then he suddenly remembered his birthright: Thoroughbred racehorse! Subsequently, he rallied like the Champion He Should Have Been to beat seven others at 45-1. Yes! No matter that one horse in turn beat him to the wire, since that horse, Door Open, was the top LifeLiner Speed Column horsey (99!) in the race.

Now, you never understand when you will be handed a better opportunity than you deserve, and so it was in this race, given that Door Open was 3½-1 on the morning line. Yet when the bell rang, Door Open’s closing odds were 8-1. Double-overlay vis-à-vis the morning line. That doesn’t happen too much! So we know you did the right and proper thing and at least saved Crimson Giant with Door Open, yielding a bonanza no-win situation of $456 on the $2 exacta. And, yes, why not throw something at Door Open, too. After all, Crimson Giant only just (only just!) finished second — by a dirty nose!

Sure, and racing is a deterministic science. Of course that is how it was scripted and directed precisely to the last frame! Grrrrr. Which is why control-freaks, micromanagers and other assorted Type A personalities have a hard time coping at the races: too much misguided belief in their own manipulations and interventions, like the amateur cook who feels the need to constantly prod and poke and flip and turn, magically believing it makes a great difference. Truly, the better course of action in the kitchen, mainly, and in life in general, is to leave the freaking food alone and let it cook in peace. It will come out OK. Or to turn the familiar phrase on its rear-end: Don’t just do something, stand there!

Yea, verily, the contemplative Zen guysz are the ones who are much likelier to do OK at the mutuelsz. They comprehend the string of moments, flows and ebbs, without trying too hard; things will happen without their or anyone else’s meddlesome egos getting in the way; and then they will not panic when the spots are tight. As well, the Zen guysz will not be grasping for a breathless explanation or rationalization the moment the winner, the one they did not pick, crosses the wire. Nor will they anoint themselves Larger Than The Game the next time they hit a triple-digit mutuel. Ecclesiastes! There is a season, regardless of your reason!

Still, it was hard to refrain from hissing after the sixth at Lexington was run. In it, Z Dager was the touted longshot, and he did better than nine others, despite 15-1 odds on the morning line and a closing price of 25-1. As always, Welcome to The Home of The Runner-Up Finish! And LifeLiner had no use for the winner. Pity.

Finally, it is amusing to observe that the mopes who teach, preach, screech and beseech on behalf of laissez-faire and the invisible hand and all that are the ones who are the fastest to react, turn their empty pockets inside out, jump up and down, get all hot and bothered, scream in righteous frenzy, take up arms, march on the Federal Districts, paint up signs with excellent sloganeering and even better spelling — what’s up with that?

Speaking really finally of which, we’d be friends with Kramer & Newman (Newman had an affair with the landlord’s wife, for crying out loud! That guy Newman! The landlord’s wife!) but the rest of them, maybe not so much. Just like you wouldn’t really want to be friends with O.J. Simpson’s Defense League — you could more easily have a beer with Darden or Marcia Clark (hopefully Hon. Ito would be far away and gone, or even the waiter; he gives all bespectacled bearded Asians an even worse name than usual), even though at the end of that charade they were made to look like the Southwestern School of Law Graduates they most decidedly were not — just like you’d rather be friends with lurkers on the Interwebsz and not people who make 50,000 posts on just one board. Fifty-thousand! Call in the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon Totalisator Board!

We are neutral. We can have a beer with you if you so wish, or else you can wish us all the ill in the universe. Either way, it will work out the way it’s supposed to. Like in that song where they sing about go ahead and cut the deck in half; we’ll play from either side.

WMF Report:

Early
Hawthorne 6f
Keystone 6f
Pimlico 6f
Turf Paradise 6f

Nocturnal Submission: Shooting for the Mountain Moon in Race 4 (8:15 p.m. EDT / 5:15 p.m. PDT) via #8 Private Purchase, #7 Armed Conflict. …

Thank you.
