Today’s Stakes Pageantry<\/strong>: Aqueduct<\/strong> might be no good lately (or at least in the throes of a dearth of eligible 8-1 shots or higher on the morning line), but we go for a straight-up upset anyway in Race 7<\/strong>, the Winkfield<\/strong>: #4 In the Fairway<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Opposite dynamic in full effect in Santa Anita 2<\/strong>, the San Pedro<\/strong>. Remember the “San Pedro Beach Bums” TV series? “Football, you bet!” They also did an episode where one of the boysz had to become a makeshift jockey. Pioneering broadcast, that, way ahead of its time. The shows these days are not so well-constructed. Unless, of course, you prefer spending hours and hours thinking about everything the producers and directors are asking you to believe. And it is a lot! And then hashing it out over the watercooler with your like-minded colleagues, or even going online to discuss the heavy significance of everything you just saw on your hi-def monitor. In which case, well, hey, TV is better than never before. We report. You decide. But back to the San Pedro, it’s all #1 Distinctiv Passion<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

And if you like that sort of odds-on issue, here’s another at Santa Anita, this time in the seventh<\/strong>, the Grade II Santa Ynez. No TV shows were named after her, not in this country, at least. It’s all #8 Beholder<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

Laurel 8<\/strong> on the pay-side<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Before that, Laurel 6, the Fire Plug (great Mid-Atlantic sprinter in the late-’80s), finds more chalk in #2 Immortal Eyes. Hey, sometimes it’s chalky out there.<\/p>\n

Yesterday’s Activity<\/strong>: If you’re going to go one-for-the-day, you may as well make it a memorable one. And so it was in Race 9 at the Gulf (again!) on Sunday. It was a contentious event, even with 6-5 morning line and 6-5 actual fave Sly Warrior in the lineup. Yes, the ’Warrior was top of the V6 Betting Line but only sixth in LifeLiner, on which he had a measly 75. <\/p>\n

The fair-odds dynamic was contentious through-and-through, with ’Warrior starting at 3½-1 and two others at 4-1 and 5-1. And then penultimately bottom, on the Betting Line, anyway, was Prize Informant.<\/p>\n

Prize Informant, 12-1 on the morning line and sent off as the longest shot in your eight-horse field at 35-1. Prize Informant, not fancied by the Betting Line, but at least in with a shout on LifeLiner, second-rated there with an 83, above the 80-minimum guideline.<\/p>\n

Prize Informant, taking the prize at $73.20. Oh Carol, 2-1 second-choice in the actual wagering and top-rated on LifeLiner, completed the $258 perfector. Favored Sly Warrior, easily ignored at miserly odds and a general lack of backing from both the fair-odds dynamic and the LifeLiner, had a bad start, but it might not have mattered; at least it didn’t this time. But that’s OK. At yesterday’s odds, we can lose the next 30 runnings of this race and still come out in decent shape. <\/p>\n
