Friday was the penultimate amphitheater show for this season\u2019s series. The players were opening act The Andrew Bird Trio, and, pictured in the snapshot ahead of today\u2019s lede, headliners Pink Martini. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

This was the top show of the year, with the Andrew Bird Trio offering music that was daring, fresh & compelling. Whether it was his unorthodox strumming of the violin (or the similarly unusual crunching of the bow on the instrument\u2019s main strings to produce an electric-guitar-sounding feedback effect) or his pitch-perfect haunting vocal whistle, Bird and his backing duo could not be taken lightly \u2014 he made you have to listen. Something in there for everyone, from folkabilly rockers to noir-inspired torch songs. All good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then came Pink Martini. By now, after 30 years of recording & touring, they might seem a bit self-referential and played-out: too much tango, repetitive rhumba, glib globetrotting etc. Yet they remain as infectious as ever, owing to their spot-on musicianship & ever-winning showmanship. Frontman & pianist & founder Thos. Lauderdale is never short on gimmicks & sharing the stage with talented-but-unheralded contemporaries, and this injects the necessary vitality that keeps the group & its shtick reasonably fresh even in its fourth decade. They\u2019ll always make you smile, especially after the conga-line antics of their standard encore, \u2018Brazil\u2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next race<\/strong> there, #8 Lightning Myqueen<\/strong> (.155 \/ 5.45 \/ 6.74) struck it lucky at $17.50<\/strong>; your winning $79.76 daily double<\/strong> had a premium price of $18.88.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#5 Creative Bid<\/strong> (.268 \/ 2.73 \/ 4.22) made himself a winner in the Auburn, Wash., opener<\/strong> at $11.44<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
