We were supposed to be able to view this topographic wonder again, in-person, by mid-afternoon MST today. However, UNITEd Airlines has been unable to accommodate us, delaying our scheduled noon PST takeoff until 5 p.m. PST \u2014 we hope. Given today\u2019s impending, West Coast-bound, raging atmospheric river, even this later departure could be in doubt. We wait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Update: Our flight finally took-off from LAX around 6:30 p.m. PST, landing at Pitkin Co. Airport just after 9:20 p.m. MST.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A couple of post-press-time connections to report from last night\u2019s (Saturday<\/strong>\u2019s) late action: At Florence, Ky.<\/strong>, Race 5<\/strong> went to #7 Now That Ican Rock<\/strong> (.155 Win Prob \/ 5.45-1 Fair Odds \/ 8.03-1 Premium Odds) at $27.96<\/strong>; completing your winning $252.96 exacta<\/strong> was #12 Accident<\/strong> (.242 \/ 3.13 \/ 3.96), with the premium price on that comboa (comboa!) being $79.65. In Race 9<\/strong>, #10 R Queen Candy<\/strong> (.316 \/ 2.16 \/ 2.80) got the W at $8.02<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today\u2019s (Sunday<\/strong>\u2019s) last-second, makeshift lineup was Oaklawn, Fair Grounds & Golden Gate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Starting with Race 6<\/strong> from New Orleans; in it, #4 Jack Hammer<\/strong> (.439 \/ 1.28 \/ 1.73) busted-up his foes at $6.40<\/strong>. In the finale<\/strong>, #6 Ellie\u2019s Boyfriend<\/strong> (.656 \/ 0.52 \/ 0.83) was true at $6.20<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another finale<\/strong>, another one lousy with first-timers, this time at Albany, Calif<\/strong>., in which #2 Yo Baby<\/strong> (.725 \/ 0.38 \/ 0.93) came up sufficiently big at $12.80<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, there was Hot Springs, Ark.<\/strong>, to hear from. In Race 7<\/strong> it was #1 Luna Moth<\/strong> (.176 \/ 4.68 \/ 6.95) seeing the light at $16.60<\/strong>. In the finale<\/strong>, #7 Adiva<\/strong> (.361 \/ 1.77 \/ 2.32) and #12 Getoutofmykitchen<\/strong> (.177 \/ 4.65 \/ 5.78) combined on your winning $31.60 exacta<\/strong> whose premium price was $31.45. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

No action tonight, but we are keeping a hopeful, long-distance eye on the atmospheric river now pummeling Southern California, especially the eastern San Fernando Valley and the canyons along Mulholland Drive: Coldwater, Laurel, Nichols. Indeed, a hillside off Laurel & Fryman Canyons in Studio City is starting to give way now, with nine homes having just been evacuated. We pray that as many local hillsides as possible will hold fast and hold strong and hold on, and that the retaining walls will stay steadfast. It\u2019s a little tough to have to watch this from 900 mi. away, the elements at their fiercest, and not having immediate knowledge of any impending danger at the Home Office in Upper Nichols Canyon.
