But back then, mid-to-late ’70s, those ideas, to a prepubescent, had no sinister motives attached. So, back to Margaritaville, the song was ehh, neutral.

Fast-forward eight or eight years later, tubbiness retained, somewhat less innocent, but still way-too-naive for postadolescence, especially far away geographically from the childhood home and socially miles away from it, back to coeducation after six years of single-sex residential schooling. Here were girls, here was booze, here was the closest approach to adulthood if not adult responsibility. Undergraduate days & nights in New Orleans, how did even that many of us escape with the first four-year degree!

Before they slipped the sheepskin into our clammy but grateful hands, though, we were compelled to do much extracurricular research at the laboratories housed in the various drinking establishments within walking distance Uptown. Many of the were gimmicky places, a little too eager to cater to the overeager social instincts of a certain demographic of students.

But one of our top joints was perfectly suited for low-key semi-serious drinkers such as ourselves. We were all in a nerdy, GPA-oriented social fraternity house on Broadway, so we weren’t looking to be posers or anything near that; however, we did not want to be dive-bar habitues, because those kinds also can be doing it for the irony & posturing.

Rather, our favorite place was half a block down Broadway, then another three or four blocks along Maple. It wasn’t a dive, and it wasn’t a scene; it was a bar, nothing more, nothing less, and you could be anyone and fit in. Perfect.

Of course this joint had a jukebox, with real records spinning inside, and there was what you’d expect: Frank Sinatra (‘Chicago, Chicago, that toddlin’ town!’; ‘The summer breeze…), Dean Martin (‘Volare, whoh-oh-oh-oh!’).

And, among the youngsters having pitchers (standard, mass-produced tiger-urine type swill; not the stouts and the craft-connoisseur-precious pale ales the kids demand at the top of their snobbery nowadays), many pitchers each night, there was Jimmy Buffett to listen to.

They had all the standards of his: ‘Margaritaville’, obvs, but also one that, to us, we still did not quite understand, being so tubby & nerdy & naïve & passive and all: ‘Why Don’t We Get Drunk…’ And if you know Jimmy Buffett, you know what the next two words in that last song are. A real crowd favorite for those people who knew what their hormones were for, and how to be directed by those hormones & who had already been well socialized with the opposite sex after attending junior high & high school with them.

But we did not enjoy such a conventional adolescence! We were tubby & nerdy & naïve, so that song was lost on us. Nonetheless, we were not entirely shut-out of the Jimmy Buffett catalog. One song was a hit for everyone, and whenever it came across on the jukebox, we sang along and pounded on the table just like everyone else.

Yes, it was that crowd-pleaser suitable for all ages & temperaments, as long as those temperaments were carnivorous & non-Kosher; yea, verily, we pitied the many Hebrew-type kids at school at Tulane, which us goyim frequently referred to as ‘JEW-lane’ — oy gevalt; how did those mopes & mopettes get through life without having had a single cheeseburger, or a bacon-cheeseburger, or a bacon-wrapped shrimp!

Anyway, that was the song, and it still brings back fine memories of raucous hanging-out with the boys & trying to figure things out while navigating all the vicissitudes of undergraduate life. To a lesser extent, ‘Fins’ also was a top Buffett song for us, but ‘Cheeseburger in Paradise’ was necessarily number-one with a bullet.

With Buffett changing latitude from the mortal to the sunk, we also consider that his famous pal, Dr. Hunter Thompson, has a new old buddy joining him somewhere along The Great Shark Hunt. Both those guys were like a bone in the throat to Middle America.
