The big orange ball in the sky is merely a rumor again, and the thick red line on the gauge has been vertically challenged to poke past 60°F for most of the past month. Again, we know you literal snowflake people must be calling us figurative snowflake people for having such a not-unreasonably cold-and-wet winter (now spring), but do remember one thing: acclimatization!

We remember coming out here back in September 1991 and shivering two months later even though it was still in the 60s°F most of the day. The blood thins out fast out here! When you arrive and expect that beautiful sunny-and-72 year round, your body will react and violently to any variation from that standard! The summers are hotter now too, way-hotter, and the mild Mediterranean climate from 30 years ago has given way to something nudging closer to Palm Springs or even Phoenix than to San Diego or Santa Barbara.

And then there has been this winter. You guys already are familiar with the concept of the ‘atmospheric river’ or the ‘bomb cyclone’ even if you never come close to clicking-on The Weather Channel. Well, having lived through it now for the past four months, we are looking forward to clearing-up and clearing-out from the surfeit of moisture. We want weather-station information that reads: at least 68°F but not exceeding 77°F; we want a relative humidity of between 30 and 50 percent. Most of all, we want the gentle sunshine and endless blue skies that are the gift all Los Angeles Co. natives & émigrés alike receive for paying the steep financial premium to reside out here all the time. Hahahaha!

And it is coming. Thursday will be dry, and then it appears we should finally hit a nice extended seam of our fabled clemency for the longest stretch in many months. Maybe a little chilly, but not cold enough to keep us from soaking up all that famous SoCal VitD for most of the daylight hours.

That said, we are grateful to Allah / Yahweh / Buddha / Shiva / The Angel Moroni etc. for all the water, which sometimes we forget we need to receive down here. The snowpack is so healthy that the ski areas in the mountains are expecting winter-sports activities through July or August, and the reservoir levels are rising. We must take it. And we will take it again next year, so long as this overall drought condition abates.

Again, this winter has been a shock to the system, a sucker punch to the solar plexus. But if we indeed are transitioning to an El Niño cycle of consecutive wetter winters, then by all means bring them. As long as we can recalibrate our weather expectations and gird ourselves psychologically and physiologically, then we will accept the new weather realities graciously. Just don’t give us the instant whipsaw!

Of course, you’ll be the first to know how it goes.

BestLine Racing Society Recap:

Gulf & Tampa from earlier.

In the Gulf opener, #2 Country Jewel (.231 Win Prob / 3.33-1 Fair Odds / 4.19-1 Premium Odds) sparkled hardest at $18.40.
