Tooling around La-La Land the past couple of months in one of \u2019em hybrid vehicles. Driving has become like playing a video game. Level-up!<\/p>\n
Max fuel efficiency possible when rolling downhill, any hill, descending from high altitude to a low one, such as from the top of Upper Nichols Canyon to the floor of the San Fernando Valley in Studio City, especially northbound via Laurel Canyon Boulevard. No need to accelerate; if the velocity gets a little out-of-control, a gentle tap of the \u2018brake\u2019 sets the regenerative counterforce into greater motion, all while the internal combustion (i.e., gasoline) engine stays asleep, the comforting green glow of the \u2018EV\u2019 indicator a constant.<\/p>\n
Initially we tried to roll downhill in the lower S3 gear, with the drive mode set to \u2018Sport\u2019, no conventional brake pedal needed; however, the regeneration was too strong, and the fuel efficiency suffered. Now we just leave the transmission on \u2018D\u2019 and never get out of \u2018Eco\u2019 mode. It makes a difference!<\/p>\n
Uphill driving is where the fuel efficiency levels off, unfortunately \u2014 there\u2019s no getting past the need to \u2018give it the gas to go\u2019! So if you are driving mainly between destinations of similar elevations, you will definitely be hypermiling with the gas-sipping gods, touching 60 mpg and 70 mpg in stop-and-go driving, no great effort necessary on your part other than a feathery light touch on the \u2018accelerator\u2019. But if the elevations are quite different, your fuel economy will end up paying the difference. Sad but true!<\/p>\n
Still, by keeping the drive mode in full Eco and the transmission in plain-old D, even the grueling uphill grinds are tolerable for the miles-per-gallon misers. True, it\u2019s nowhere near the unbridled power and feeling of hedonistic freedom of downshifting from fifth-to-third on your old V6 manual-transmission hyperbeast, but sometimes a change is good.<\/p>\n
