Yea, verily, around 1976 or 1977, when you shopped at the Pantry Pride grocery stores along the Eastern Seaboard, they gave you something called ‘Pantry Pride At the Races’ tickets or somesuch. With these tickets in hand, you were then directed to watch a weekly television programme called ‘Pantry Pride At the Races’ or somesuch. The show featured recently run past races from — yup, you guessed it — Calder.

You would look at your ticket for the race number, alongside which was printed a corresponding horse number. If your horse won that race, you could go into the store the next day after the broadcast to redeem your prize: free groceries or cigarettes or pipe tobacco or somesuch.

It was all the rage. We were in fourth grade in the public-school system of the Mississippi part of New Jersey, and the teachers would be screaming excitedly in the hallways about how they won stuff from last night’s showing of ‘Pantry Pride At the Races’, or whatever it was called.

That’s where their involvement in the sport began and ended. However, some of us or our parents had their curiosity piqued from this gimmick promotion, and we were among those households. So, yea, verily, that is how some of us NOT BORN INTO THE SPORT got into it. First Delaware Park, then the old Garden State, then Frantic City; it was all over but the shouting. And here we are today.

One of the things we still remember from the broadcasts of that old ‘Pantry Pride At the Races’ show was the laconic style of the racecaller/announcer, who never failed to mention that Calder had that ‘Tartan Track’ surface, which was nice and bouncy on the horses’ hooves. Very laid back announcer, down-home folksy style, never failing to mention that Tartan Track surface at Calder.

R.I.P, Calder.

Yesterday:

Aqueduct 6
#3 Suz ($49.60, BestLine Fair Odds 9.10-1)

Churchill 4
#1 Lock Up ($27, BestLine Fair Odds 2.08-1)

Delta 1
#10 Marquee Moment ($23, BestLine Fair Odds 3.07-1)

Fair Grounds 5
#12 Max Pandowdy ($20, BestLine Fair Odds 5.21-1)

Tampa 3
#6 U Know I B Lion (10-1 but paid $10.80 in a dead heat, BestLine Fair Odds 6.04-1)

Need CT, PEN, RP

There were seven selected races yesterday.
