Read something!\u2019&nbsp;<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Back in those days, going to the library was a big deal, waiting for the latest books to come in. One year, just before commencement, a new Dick Francis title was placed on the New Arrivals table. We snatched it up and signed our name to the card tucked into the inside of the back cover. Alas! We were beaten to the punch by \u2014 yup! you guessed it! \u2014 the legendary Milton scholar Mistah Fred Gerstell.<\/p>\n<p>So, yes, Mistah Fred Gerstell, besides being a Milton scholar and general fan of the Western literary canon, also indulged in the brain candy that was the latest Dick Francis mystery yarn. He lived up to his old injunction: \u2018I don\u2019t care what you read. Read something!\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Variously and currently on our virtual nightstand, it\u2019s Herodotus,&nbsp;<em>The Histories<\/em>; Elizabeth Bowen, <em>The Death of the Heart<\/em>; Richard Haass, <em>The World: A Brief Introduction;&nbsp;<\/em>Jim Al-Khalili, <em>The World According to Physics<\/em>; Bessel van der Kolk, <em>The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma<\/em>; and, on audiobook, of course, Mary L.
