CARMINE ABBATIELLO in the bike! Those were the days when the cities had their own breweries. Newark, N.J., had its own brewery, for crying out loud. The Ballantine! All the great New York City brands like Rheingold and Schaefer, obviously, too. Philalala had Schmidt’s. Remember Schmidt’s in Philalala, Penna.? Schmidt’s marketing plan was genius: planting a great player of the same name on the local baseball team. Every night you wanted to have a Schmidt’s, with a Carlton (PLEASE TRY CARLTON!) cigarette dangling from your lip! Later, it was a big deal when Coors was finally sold East of the Mississippi. Coors and its famous rice formulation, The Banquet Beer, like supercharged water so that it never got in the way of the food, the meal, hence the name ‘The Banquet Beer’. It’s a good strategy. These beers today, you have to be a snob to enjoy them. It’s the way of the world. They take something nice and simple and relaxing (beer, baseball, horseracing) and they fetishize it to the point that if you don’t communicate that previously simple thing in terms of the new and fetishized lingo (IPA ABV, exit velo, 18-generation cross-nick), then you become hopeless. It’s a little bit of a snob move. It’s hard when you have to fetishize something to feel like you belong. It’s a hard business. Better to relax. Let the moment come to you. Don’t try so hard. Maybe. Have a beer while relaxing, if you can. CARMINE ABBATIELLO in the bike. Catello Manzi in the bike. Jack Moiseyev in the bike. Chariot racing and beer, two great things that go great together, and there’s no need to fetishize either of them. Finally, in terms of adjuncts to Thoroughbred racing, chariots way better than Quarters. Even steeplechasing way better than Quarters. Chariots superior to Quarters. Not even close. If they want to shut down some horseracing, it should be Quarters. Any Thoroughbred track that has to card Quarters during the season, it’s hard to accept. Thank you. How did this get so far away from beer and chariot racing? Long live CARMINE ABBATIELLO. Long live CHARIOT RACING. PETA, please go bother the Quarters now. Thank you.

Yesterday:

Chas.
