For example, &lsquo;Dr.&rsquo; is short for &rsquo;Drive&rsquo;, since the letters &lsquo;i&rsquo;, &lsquo;v&rsquo; and &lsquo;e&rsquo; come after the &lsquo;r&rsquo;. However, the abbreviation &lsquo;Dr&rsquo; (without the period at the end) is short for &lsquo;Doctor&rsquo;, since the are no further letters after the &lsquo;r&rsquo;. And now you know.
