Target: one slippery equine presence known simply as…Cashinmywranglers.

As you likely know by now, every day of the year (save Christmas), the notorious Boysz in the Backroom send out for-hire recommendations for longshot plays. They hit a good spread of tracks up and down and from side to side of the North American continent, and one of the regions they focus on is Texarkana, comprising places such as Oaklawn, Fair Grounds, Sam Houston, Louisiana, Lone Star and Retama.

On April 16, 2011, the Boysz encountered an aptly named issue: Cashinmywranglers. He was trying to win the sixth race that day at Lone Star, and the Boysz said to themselves, “Hey, why not!” He only got trounced by 20 lengths while finishing dead last in his previous start, so nowhere to go but up.

At 16-1 the price was right, and after the bell rang, there were cheap thrills aplenty. Cashinmywranglers went straight for the front, as is his wont, and led them deep into the lane.

If you know anything about turf racing on Planet Earth, it’s that last furlong that tends to count most; rarely are outcomes determined before the final 660 feet have been contested. So it was on April 16, and Cashinmywranglers duly bowed out after his early efforts, winding up seventh of 11.

Flash-forward to May 20. The Boysz scanned the Lone Star card and upon whom should they happen but — yep, you guessed it — Cashinmywranglers!

Clearly, the horse was playing hard-to-get, and the Boysz were not ones to be easily denied. Cashinmywranglers showed up reasonably strong again on May 20, in the day’s eighth race, and this time he was a top selection: no Bonkersmate status this go-round! At 20-1 on the morning line, full speed ahead.

On paper, anyway. The reality of the moment was quite different: Cashinmywranglers was a raceday scratch. No harm, no foul.

Flash-forward one last time to yesterday, June 9, and the sixth race at Lone Star. Who’s in the field? Of course: Cashinmywranglers!

The Boysz were smitten and their affection was unrequited. One last shot, back to Bonkersmate status for Cashinmywranglers. Indeed, the Boysz added a rare editorial comment next to the horse’s name: “(again…)” — the equivalent of a selector’s sigh of exasperation.

Except this time, Cashinmywranglers did not disappoint! Mission accomplished! At 15-1 on the morning line, the horse went to the front and somehow stayed there all the way around. Yes! And it counts!

The Boysz were steadfast, and this time they were rewarded. However, the public had had enough, and the odds on Cashinmywranglers were way better than the morning line, all the way up to 27-1. Mark ’im up!

Moral: Persistence pays off, and indeed this morning there is extra cash for the Boysz…stuffed into the hip pockets of their…button-fly Levi 501s.

The Boysz were on a mission from the parimutuel gods.
