Final concert of the season at the Amphitheatre, and it was this gentleman headlining a concert celebrating the 300th Anniv. of the City of New Orleans.

Back when we were living in New Orleans in the mid-late 1980s, you could not escape this guy — and even then he was only in his late-teens, early 20s! He was the son of the District Attorney prosecuting the infamous basketball point-shaving scandal (lookin’ at you, John ‘Hot Rod’ Williams!) at ol’ Tulane, and that guy also had the name Harry Connick, so they had to distinguish him on the radio (WWL forever!) as ‘New Orleans District Attorney Harry Connick Snr.’ Then after a few minutes, there would be some announcement regarding the live entertainment in the city that evening, and invariably it would be about ‘Harry Connick Jnr. playing tonight at Tipitina’s,’ ‘Harry Connick Jnr. performing at Snug Harbor’ etc. Memories.

Trumpet, tapdancing, drumkit, singing and, of course, piano. A fantastically tight and articulate ensemble backing him up, with Basin Street Blues and Hold That Tiger standing out among the real New Orleans numbers, especially with the trombone and trumpet solos. Playful and technically proficient piano-only version of the old Brazilian favorite Tico-Tico, too.

The Ladies Love Him, but no instances of any room keys, unmentionables or even flowers thrown at him in adoration. What? A guy rolls past 50 and there’s no more swooning or screaming? Unfair! He deserved better!

Pick track of your Saturday is Woodbine! The last four there now, Races 811, appear worthwhile.

By the way, one of the old-timey nicknames for New Orleans is ‘The City That Care Forgot’. And they were not wrong!
