Better than Javanka

This time of year again. Good show.

Mr. Dudamel remains the anti-politician, the opposite of a populist; no remarks from the podium, like a sushi ninja preparing omakase, the act itself is sufficient. The L.A. Phil was reduced to sounding like Mantovani on steroids, what with a trio of Henry Mancini numbers including — yup, you guessed it — ‘Moon River’. Then a little Rossini-sounding Verdi, courtesy of the Overture to Nabucco but not the subsequent ‘Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves’. Oh, well.

Mr. Bennett did what he does, on the cusp of age 91, one guy from Queens we all can agree on. Some nice arrangements ranging from bossa nova to traditional jazz-club charting with 16-bar solos — you get the idea. No false notes from the crooner, no warbling for the right pitch, pipes still in top shape, a blessing. Thank you.

A match race goes in Assiniboia (!) 2. Have a blast. Race 6 there is much better, however, and we bypass the top two morning-line faves and go instead with #1 Paint My Ride, #6 Witt’sdollarnight, #7 Hard Knocks Rock.

Should be OK for the ultraobvious #3 Daz Lin Dawn in Hastings 3.

Big day for the Hoosier State: Indiana has six stakes events on tap, led by Race 3, in which #3 Hip Hop N Jazz and #10 Be Playful emerge as live-longshot-type plays. Race 5 there is another doozie, and we tiptoe around the morning-line fave and prefer #5 Chocolate Ride, #8 Western Reserve, #1 One Mean Man, #2 Special Ops, #9 Surgical Strike. Hoo-boy. #3 I’mluckysgirl has the potential to spice-up Race 8. Wild-open in Race 9, wild-open — you go ahead and pick the numbers.

#6 Double Bear is not out of it in Northlands 8.

Sidestepping the morning-line fave in Prairie 8: #3 Hey Baby, #2 Battle Queen, #4 I’m Nasty Too. In Race 9, a cold-puncher’s box of #12 Shweet Persuasion, #3 Dreamin the Dream.

Extra for experts: Crooked River Roundup (what?) 9 has a standout in #4 Ain’t Tellin’. Kindly inform your friendly local turf account for access to this one.
