Go back to sleep, Grizz!
There was one race at the old Meadowlands, when they used to run on the main track there. Julie Krone (remember her?) had opened up a five-length lead as the odds-on fave in deep stretch in a sprint stakes. It was all over bother shouting. Then CRAFTY TENDERONI with MARYANN ALLIGOOD comes WHOOSHING past at 18-1 or such, and one of the Guidos staring at the television must have had a couple thousand rolling on Krone and the chalk, because all he could do was start screaming in that inimitable North Jersey way, “Go back to sleep, Julie! [Expletive expletive]!”.
Then you contrast that ride with how she did on Colonial Affair in the Belmont, and you realize that there’s a wide range of performances we’re all capable of turning in. Truly, only the mediocre are at their best all the time.
